If you were exposed to HIV through unprotected sex and/or direct blood contact, taking PEP within 72-hours of exposure can greatly reduce the likelihood of contracting HIV. Please proceed to an emergency room immediately, even if you do not have insurance. Unfortunately, due to the limitations with delivery, we’re unable to assist you given the limited timeframe.

Doxy-PEP is a preventive treatment that uses a 200 mg dose of doxycycline after potential exposure to certain sexually transmitted infections (STIs). When taken within 24 to 72 hours after condomless sex, research suggests it may significantly reduce the risk of bacterial STIs, including syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea.

It is intended for prevention only and should not be used as a treatment for an active STI. If you develop symptoms or believe you have an STI, please consult your healthcare provider.

Doxy-PEP is available only to eligible patients who are prescribed PrEP or HIV treatment through HerMister. If approved, your Doxy-PEP prescription will be provided along with your prescribed treatment plan.

Insurance

To help make your care as affordable as possible, we'll review your insurance benefits for eligible services and medications. Most patients have little to no out-of-pocket costs, depending on their coverage.

If you don't have insurance or your plan has limited coverage, our team will determine whether you qualify for available patient assistance programs. We'll guide you through the process and handle the necessary paperwork whenever possible.

Please Note: HerMister telehealth services are provided at no cost to eligible patients. If and when applicable, insurance may be used to help cover medication and laboratory expenses. Coverage varies by insurance provider, and some plans may not be accepted.

Lab Testing

Before starting PrEP, you'll need to complete routine laboratory testing to confirm you're eligible for treatment and to ensure it's safe to begin medication. Regular HIV and STI screening, along with kidney function testing, are recommended as part of ongoing PrEP care.

HerMister offers convenient testing options, including at-home test kits and in-person laboratory testing, so you can choose the option that works best for you. Your healthcare provider will review your results before prescribing treatment.

Plan

Before starting PrEP, you'll need to complete a simple laboratory test to confirm that you're HIV-negative and that your kidneys are healthy enough for treatment. As recommended by the CDC, routine STI screening every 3–6 months is also an important part of ongoing PrEP care.
